Planescape: Torment is a computer role-playing game developed for Microsoft Windows by Black Isle Studios in 1999. The game takes place in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Planescape campaign setting. Torment places emphasis on conversation and storyline instead of combat. The game begins in Sigil, where the protagonist, an enigmatic and heavily scarred immortal dubbed The Nameless One by the game’s interface, wakes up in a mortuary with no memory of his identity and past experiences. Assuming the role of The Nameless One, players embark on a quest to solve the mysteries surrounding him.

The game sold about 400,000 copies, according to game designer Scott Warner, but received almost universal critical praise; it has since become a cult classic. The game was added to Gamespy’s “Hall of Fame” in August 2004, and to Gamespot’s “Greatest Games of All Time” list in October 2005.

Notes:
Alright, this is the original 4CD version (though I hear it is possible to merge them into a DVD by adding them to the cd1 ISO), which means you’ll be needing a patch, and a couple tricks so you don’t have to keep mounting/unmounting disks all the time.

First off, install the game. Then grab some patches, both official and unofficial that make the game more stable and fix many bugs (for the platter patches simply extract those files into the override folder in your installation directory):

Once you’ve installed those, perform this tweak to improve loading times and general performance and allow you to use other tweaks, like a widescreen enabler, annoyance tweaks, and a nocd crack:

Copy the folders off of the cd’s to your system locally. Then edit the torment.ini file that is in the torment directory. The top part should look like this:

HD0:=e:\Torment
CD1:=F:\CD1\
CD2:=F:\CD2\
CD3:=F:\CD3\
CD4:=F:\CD4\
CD5:=F:\CD5\

If you copied the folders from the cd’s to the following directory:

c:\torment\

Then your .ini file should be changed to look like this:

HD0:=e:\Torment
CD1:=c:\CD1\
CD2:=c:\torment\CD2\
CD3:=c:\torment\CD3\
CD4:=c:\torment\CD4\
CD5:=c:\CD5\

If you wish, you can extract the files from the disks 2, 3, and 4 into one folder, like disks, and then point cd2 cd3 cd4 to the same directory to save yourself some diskspace, since the cds contain some duplicate files.

NOTE: You need to do this before you do the crack or tweaks or widescreen fix.

Next, you probably don’t want to play the game in 640×480, am I right? Here are the promised tweaks, including an option to play in custom resolutions, increase the number of stackable items, remove fog of war, and other very nice tweaks. Also includes a nocd crack for 1.1 4CD version only:

Apply the crack first, then the widescreen, then the tweaks. Apparently the HP tweak can cause issues with other mods so keep that in mind (in other words, if torment gets an error when you try to run it, uninstall the hp tweak by running the g3 tweak file again). In between steps make sure to run PS:T in order to make sure everything still works so you know where/if you went wrong. Here is what the game looks like in 1280×1024 thanks to the widescreen tweak, which lets you customize the resolution:

You may notice the black bar at the bottom of the screen because the UI was not meant for such large resolutions. There happens to be a mod for this as well, that properly centers dialogues and provides nice high-res backgrounds. If you use a resolution of size 1280×800, 1280×768 or 1280×1024, you’re in luck!

Some other tweaks you can do is go into the install directory and locate the torment.ini file. Open it with notepad or another easy text editor and change the following lines to

path search nodes=32000
Maximum frame rate=40
CacheSize=1
